Brad Pitt shares the story of how he crashed a wedding while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005. Directed by Doug Liman, Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Pitt and Angelina Jolie as the titular married couple, two rival assassins who realize they’ve been hired by different companies to kill each other. The film was met with somewhat mixed reviews from critics, but would go on to earn over $487 million at the global box office. Now, more than 17 years later, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is getting a TV show adaptation of the same name starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, which is expected to release on Prime Video at some point this year.
In a recent interview with W Magazine to celebrate the release of Babylon from director Damien Chazelle, Pitt reveals that he once crashed a wedding while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The actor explains that the movie was filming a few floors down in the same building as a wedding party, and he decided to go up and join in on the fun. “I have crashed a wedding party. It was on the set of Mr. & Mrs. [Smith]. We were filming down in this Deco building downtown, and up in the penthouse above, we kept seeing people going up and down. It was a wedding party, so I crashed it. And they were okay with it. [Laughs]”
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Was A Peak Brad Pitt Era
Although Pitt is still very much one of the most well-known and successful movie stars of all time, the actor’s run during the 2000s is still hard to beat. After starring in Fight Club, Snatch, and Spy Game, Pitt’s next big role came in 2001 with the release of Ocean’s Eleven. Steven Soderbergh’s clever heist film was a big hit, and Pitt would reprise his role as Rusty Ryan in Ocean’s Twelve in 2004. Also in 2004, Pitt flexed his movie star muscles once more in Troy from director Wolfgang Peterson. The film earned mixed reviews but earned over $497 million at the box office.
After starring in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Pitt started to take on some more interesting roles, pushing back slightly against the suave and stylish characters he had become known for. In addition to reprising his role as Rusty for the last time in Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007, Pitt also starred in Burn After Reading, a darkly comedic Coen Brothers gem, proving once more that he could do more than just play the traditional leading man type. From there, Pitt starred in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and, in what has since become a fan-favorite performance, played Lt. Aldo Raine in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds in 2009. The actor would continue to star in hit films during the 2010s, but his mid-2000s run features an interesting mix of big, Hollywood blockbusters and smaller, more auteur-driven projects.
What’s Next For Brad Pitt?
Pitt continues to stay busy as a producer and is currently attached to produce several upcoming projects, including Wrong Answer, a drama starring Michael B. Jordan, and The Tiger, a thriller starring Alexander Skarsgård. As far as acting is concerned, however, Pitt is slated to star in Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s next untitled movie, which is said to follow a retired Formula One driver who returns to the sport to mentor a young protégé. Despite fan appreciation for Mr. & Mrs. Smith growing in the years since its release, it doesn’t look like Pitt will return in any capacity for Amazon’s reboot series.
