A Coventry mum is overjoyed after giving birth to Britain’s first twins of the new year. The couple Brigitta Suha, 32, and husband Norbert, 35, welcomed their twin daughters, Veronika and Victoria on Saturday, 1 January.
The twins were born 35 minutes apart. The newborns are the ʜᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ’s first ever set of New Year twins – and Britain’s first pair of twins in 2022.
Brigitta had a sᴄᴀɴ early in the ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ after ғᴇᴀʀɪɴɢ she was experiencing another ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ after experiencing ʙʟᴇᴇᴅs. However, the couple were over-the-moon to learn there were two healthy ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙᴇᴀᴛs. The mum-of-three, who moved to England from Hungary in 2012, said: “The surprise came really early that we were having twins. But it was even more of a surprise to have them born on New Year’s Day. It has been amazing to find out that we were the first twins of 2022. It will be a nice story to tell them when they get older. Having being born on New Year’s Day, it is certainly and birthday I will not forget. I had my daughter, Bernadett in 2019, and then after that, unfortunately, I sᴜғғᴇʀᴇᴅtwo ᴍɪsᴄᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇs, one in 2020 and another in 2021.
I went into Coventry early on in this ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ because I was ʙʟᴇᴇᴅɪɴɢ and was ʀᴜsʜᴇᴅ in for sᴄᴀɴs and found out we were having twins. We were really happy but sᴄᴀʀᴇᴅ too. Obviously because we were having twins, and I was ʜɪɢʜ ʀɪsᴋ of ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ, we had to be careful and go for extra sᴄᴀɴs and meetings. The NHS ᴘᴏʟɪᴄʏ with twins is to induce them at 37 weeks, Their ᴅᴜᴇ date was January 20 but I went into labour on New Year’s Eve at 10pm. Obviously, at the time, you are not thinking could this be the first birth of the new year. But the birth of both Veronika and Viktoria went really well, they were both natural births – we are both so happy even though I know we’ll certainly have our hands full.”
Brigitta went into an ɪɴᴅᴜᴄᴇᴅ ʟᴀʙᴏᴜʀ about at 10pm on New Year’s Eve at University Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ Coventry, ᴅᴜᴇ to her ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ being ʜɪɢʜ-ʀɪsᴋ. Veronika was born at 2.54am weighing 5lbs 11oz and was followed shortly by Viktoria at 3.29am weighing 5lb 3oz – becoming the ʜᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ’s first-ever set of New Year twins. Brigitta, who works in finance, said added: “We had two midwives with us and the health care assistant, who were all amazing. With Ⓒⓞⓥⓘⓓ ʀᴇsᴛʀɪᴄᴛɪᴏɴs in place at the Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ, the staff were so helpful and it was a nice experience.
They made us feel really welcome. We were really worried about Ⓒⓞⓥⓘⓓ, but in the end, it was fine. We were in a twin delivery room so my husband could be there with us. The staff at the Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ were just as happy as us by the looks of it. We were really happy to share the experience with them – especially after they had been working hard over the Christmas and New Year period.”
Proud dad Norbert, a manufacturing engineer, said the babies are happy and healthy and are spending time with their two-year-old big sister Bernadett at home. He added: “Bernadett was sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ at first, it was like she thinking ‘what are all those babies doing here?’ But then after a couple of minutes, she soon came round to being a big sister. She has started to help with bathing them and look after them. We are all really happy.”
