For the past 30 years, John Chhan and his wife, Stella, have been the proud owners of Donut City, a doughnut shop located in Seal Beach, California.
John and Stella arrived in California as Cambodian refugees in 1979 and have been hard at work ever since.
As the years passed, Donut City customers came to depend on their morning donuts and coffee, served by the friendly couple who worked behind the counter, side by side.
But one day, the patrons noticed Stella’s absence. And the next day, and the next. Where had she gone?
John revealed his beloved wife had suffered an aneurysm. She was in rehabilitation and working to get her strength back. All John wanted to do is spend as much time with her as possible, but he also needed to keep their business up and running.
Loyal and caring customers reached out to John to see if they could set up a GoFundMe page for him and Stella, but he said no.
This story first appeared on LittleThings in November 2018.
Determined to help John spend more time with Stella, the customers came up with another plan — and this one he couldn’t refuse.
Now their incredible and selfless gesture is going viral, touching hearts around the world

Retail and restaurant workers have been working so hard on the pandemic front lines, which is one reason why these types of videos continue to be so discouraging and frustrating to watch.
On a Sunday morning in lower Manhattan, a female customer at Davidovich Bakery was refusing to wear a mask.
The woman, who had four young children with her, was holding up the line while ignoring several requests to either put on a face mask or leave.
Another customer in line, Jack, figured the anti-masker’s behavior would make for a compelling video. He pulled out his phone and started to record.
But Jack certainly didn’t expect the woman to unleash a racist tirade, especially in front of the children.
The security guard turned to the woman to try to convince her to leave the market. “Ma’am, he’s not gonna serve you, so please leave.”
With that, the woman started cursing, using racial slurs toward a Black employee standing behind the counter. “I can call him whatever I want,” she retorted.
Since the video has gone viral, viewers everywhere have been showing their support for the staff member who remained so calm and professional.
