A young elephant without a trunk has been seen traversing the Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀn plains. After video emerged showing the calf in Kruger National Park strolling amid an elephant herd without a vital body part, concerns for its safety have grown.
A predator was probably responsible for ripping off its recognizable appendage, according to safari staff who admitted they were unsure of how it ʟᴏsᴛ it.
They claimed that crocodiles had been known to grab baby elephants by their trunks while they drank from lakes in a number of instances. When lions ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ big animals, they are known to cling on the trunk. Another theory was that it might have gotten caught in a trap.
The body component is made from the upper lip and nose of an elephant. This enormous appendage, which has more than 100,000 muscles, is both strong and agile. The animals consume ɢʀᴀss from the ground and gather plants and fruit from trees using their trunks.
For drinking or self-cleaning, they use the trunk to absorb as much as two liters of water at once. Elephants defend themselves from predators by using their trunks as well. One of the most potentially fatal things that can happen to the animal is losing the trunk.
