Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp gets a boost from Roberto Firmino as a dream line-up is predicted

Jurgen Klopp kept his cards close to his chest during the January transfer window, but he has received a boost regarding Roberto Firmino, whose contract at Liverpool is coming to an end.

Klopp: What can I say about Firmino? He's like the engine of the team - Liverpool FC

Liverpool were never expected to be active in the January transfer window after spending big money in the summer – and they stuck to their guns on a quiet deadline day.

The Reds did acquire the services of Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo in a £45million deal in the days leading up to the winter window, but they failed to address the issues in midfield that have plagued them all season.

It’s likely Jurgen Klopp will try to amend those problems in the summer, but with the Reds ninth in the Premier League and at risk of missing out on qualifying for the Champions League, the German’s plans – and targets – could still be significantly altered.

After a quiet end to the January window, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest news from Anfield…

Klopp’s Firmino boost

Klopp: I don't know how many goals Firmino has scored

The agent of Roberto Firmino has teased that discussions over a new contract for the Liverpool forward are likely to conclude this month.

Firmino, 31, is due to be a free agent in the summer but has been locked in talks with the Anfield hierarchy for months in a bid to thrash out a new deal. And although the veteran striker’s influence has waned over the past 18 months, the Reds are still eager to retain his services.

Negotiations between Firmino and the club have yet to yield an agreement but his agent, Roger Wittmann, has provided an encouraging update on discussions – and predicted that a positive conclusion to the draining saga could be reached before the month is out.

January’s winners and losers

After the Reds only signed one player in January, there are plenty of question marks hanging over some members of the Liverpool squad.

Despite Liverpool’s well-documented issues in midfield, Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo was the only played who arrived at Anfield in the winter transfer window, meaning certain players were handed a reprieve.

As the dust settles following the January transfer window, there are plenty of winners and losers at Anfield, including some of the club’s fringe players.

Liverpool didn’t splash the cash in January, but they are expected to overhaul their squad in the summer, when funds are likely to be available.

It’s already been widely reported that Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is the club’s top transfer target, while Brighton’s sought-after midfielder Moises Caicedo is also still on the Reds’ radar. Matheus Nunes of Wolves could also come back under consideration at the end of the season as Klopp bids to rebuild his faltering engine room.
