Liverpool transfer: Gerrard’s Bellingham plan, and the Reds’ interest in Chelsea’s Mount

Liverpool have only made one January addition in Cody Gakpo and that could be it as they turn attention to the summer, when Jude Bellingham will be on their radar

Liverpool’s lacklustre draw with Chelsea highlighted where the team are at with new boy Cody Gakpo failing to fire in attack.

The Reds are sat in mid-table, but are hopeful of putting together a run that could haul them back into Champions League contention. There are unlikely to be any new signings for Jurgen Klopp, with attention now turning to their summer recruitment, which is set to centre around a midfielder.

Much has been made about the club’s decision not to invest in a marquee name in the middle of the park. Many of their established stars are ageing, which has been cited as an issue this term. Failing to make the top four could hamper their recruitment in the summer, but for now big names are being considered.

Here’s the latest from Anfield.

Gerrard’s Bellingham plan

Steven Gerrard has joked that he is willing to fly to Germany to secure the signing of Jude Bellingham. The Borussia Dortmund man is among the most-wanted men in football and could well be on the move this summer, albeit for a mammoth fee.

Gerrard has identified the Englishman as the man Liverpool should pursue – and even offered to get involved. He told BT Sport: “Right now, I think the obvious one is Bellingham off the back of the World Cup and what he’s doing out in Dortmund anyway. I’m a huge fan of him, I think the way he comes across, the way he speaks about the game, his performances that I’ve seen every time he impresses me.”

He then added on his own efforts: “All he needs to do is send his diary to me, when he’s got a free day. I’ll fly to Dortmund personally, take him out for a nice dinner and we’ll talk about it.”

Chelsea plot Mount talks amid Red interest

Chelsea are ready to hold talks with midfielder Mason Mount over a possible new deal as interest from Liverpool remains, according to The Guardian .

Mount, who currently has 18 months left in his current contract, has become an established member of the Blues squad, often starting. He’s enjoyed a rapid rise in recent years but that is not reflected in his pay packet.

He earns £75,000-a-week – which makes him one of the lowest-earning members of the squad – and the Stamford Bridge hierarchy are now looking to tie him down to an extension, which will no doubt include a hefty pay rise, to ensure he remains in west London.

Firmino’s hope

Roberto Firmino has suggested he wants to extend his Liverpool deal despite talk of him leaving once his contract retires.

The Brazilian, who was signed back when Brendan Rodgers was in charge, has fallen down the pecking order and is no longer the starter he once was. Darwin Nunez was added in the summer whilst Klopp has several other options at his disposal.

As a result, Firmino was expected to move on, but has now told the club’s matchday magazine that he’d like to remain. “I’m happy here and I intend to stay here and help Liverpool FC,” he said. “It’s a dream for all players to win the Premier League and Champions League.

“It’s history, a huge legacy. When it happened, we felt tremendously privileged, grateful to God for having given this to us.”
