A loving mother has been seen assisting her newborn baby elephant in standing up again after it had a bad fall during its first few clumsy steps.
The smallest calf repeatedly collapsed at the water’s edge as the new family – a mother and her two children – made their way to the river in Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ to get a drink. Fortunately, mom was nearby to assist, and she can be seen tenderly raising her priceless child back up using her feet and trunk.
Charl Stols, a Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀn wildlife photographer, took the endearing pictures. The 39-year-old, a photo host for Pangolin Photo Safaris, saw the endearing sᴄᴇɴᴇ while on a boat excursion.
The elephant cow and two young elephants were making their way to the river for a drink, according to Charl, who spent around 40 minutes observing the elephants in action. The smaller calf, which was still pink and unsteady on its hooves, appeared to be just a few hours old.
The infant repeatedly dived into the water at the water’s edge, but its mother tenderly assisted it back up by using her trunk and feet. Surprisingly, they even managed to cross the river to one of the islands, and the youngster successfully swam the entire distance with only its trunk poking above the surface.
Charl said that it was a truly memorable occasion. Chobe is home to many elephants, but he didn’t think he had ever seen one so young. It was heartwarming to observe the mother gently guiding him and then even witness the young calf swimming. Though that was already quite ᴄʟᴏsᴇ, he still had a dream about someday witnessing a mother giving birth.
