27 coffins containing mummies buried more than 2,500 years ago have just been discovered in Egypt. This is the first time in history that archaeologists have discovered such a large number of mummies.

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, 13 unopened coffins were found stacked in a well nearly 12m deep. These coffins are so well preserved that the original design and color details are still clearly visible.

Archaeologists discovered a collection of coffins at the Saqqara site, an ancient ruins located about 20 miles south of the Egyptian capital and home to famous landmarks including the Great Pyramid. step tower (Pyramid of Djoser).
Archaeologists believe these are the oldest coffins in the world. In the coming days, archaeologists are expected to continue to excavate and explore this site.

On his personal Twitter account, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Archeology Khaled El-Enany expressed “an indescribable feeling when you witness a new archaeological discovery”.
This discovery comes just a week after Egypt reopened archaeological sites and museums to visitors after closing in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tourism is the backbone of the Egyptian economy. In 2019, the country welcomed more than 13.6 million visitors. More than a million people work in the tourism sector.
Before the discovery of this set of ancient coffins, archaeologists unearthed many other coffins at the Saqqara site earlier this year. In April, archaeologists unearthed four coffins containing the mummies, along with five limestone coffins in the same burial shaft.
