Dramatic images capture the precise moment a 400-pound lion made the decision to hunt seven impalas for food.
The starving cat was observed charging the unfortunate herd and attempting to swallow the entire group in his mouth.
Photographer Cʜᴀᴅ Fisher, 27, of Durban, Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ, was in Kruger National Park when the lion unexpectedly materialized 20 feet from his car. The King of the Jungle went on the ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ and charged the herd of impalas. A rapid thinker Fisher pulled out his camera and took pictures of the amazing sᴄᴇɴᴇs.
In one picture, the lion charged at the impalas, sending them scattering in all directions. One of its buddies lay frozen in ғᴇᴀʀ at the lion’s feet as the fatal impala hung out of the animal’s jaws in another. The lion stood over all seven impalas, trying to ram them into his jaws, according to Fisher, who described the incident.
As crowds grew, he was able to put one in his mouth while another rested at his feet. In their panic, the young impalas slid and skidded. After finishing off the impalas, the lion, according to Fisher, proceeded into the bush. It wasn’t until the very last second that they felt the lion’s presence, by which time it was too late.
The male lions spend their time guarding the pride’s territory and cubs, whereas the female lionesses mostly ʜᴜɴᴛ for the pride. Male lions, on the other hand, can ʜᴜɴᴛ and have honed their own techniques. Male lions prefer to ʜᴜɴᴛ alone and use the cover of the surrounding vegetation to sᴜʀᴘʀɪsᴇ their prey, unlike female lions who ʜᴜɴᴛ in packs. 10% of the ʜᴜɴᴛ is conducted by males for the pride.
