It was a bad night all round for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as they lost 1-0 to Manchester City – but in particular for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was subbed on and off
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s nightmare start to life at Chelsea continued against Manchester City as he was substituted off after being brought on earlier in the match.
Aubameyang, who’s scored just three goals in 15 appearances in all competitions since joining the Blues last summer, started on the bench on Thursday (January 5) evening as they played host to City.
He was called upon early on by Graham Potter after Raheem Sterling suffered a suspected hamstring injury, making his introduction in the fifth minute. But with the Blues 1-0 down, the striker was replaced in the 68th minute by youngster Omari Giraud-Hutchinson.
During his limited time on the pitch Aubameyang had just 14 touches of the ball and didn’t take a shot. It was a bad night for him and Chelsea all round.
Shortly after Sterling hobbled off Christian Pulisic joined him down the tunnel to compound Potter’s injury woes, which also include a problem for Mason Mount who was ruled out of the match.
The Blues managed to keep a tight ship in spite of the disruption, but City substitutes Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez combined to breach their defence after the break.
Potter took the result with a pinch of salt, saying post-match: “When you consider everything, losing Raheem [Sterling] and Christian [Pulisic] so early, the lads gave everything.
“It was a spirited performance against a top team, so apart from the result I’m proud of the players.”
Chelsea will now travel to face City again at the Etihad on Sunday (January 8) when the two sides meet in the third round of the FA Cup.
