2023 will be a record-breaking political year. Thanks to a strong showing in governor races across the country, 12 women will be state governors this year — eclipsing the previous record of nine.
While this is good news, this still falls far behind the number of men in the same offices across the U.S., which is aligned with the same issues at all levels of local, state and national politics.
So what more needs to be done to get more women a seat at the top tables and keep them there? Betsy Fischer Martin, executive director of the Women & Politics Institute at American University, joins Here & Now‘s Celeste Headlee.
