Over the course of her decades-long career as a superhero, Carol Danvers has faced off against some of the most menacing threats the Marvel Universe has to offer. Of course, the Brood are some of the most dangerous among them, which her insectile enemies have just proven all over again by taking the life of Carol’s literal other half. As tragic as this is, Captain Marvel has at least managed to lay Binary to rest in the most perfect place in the cosmos, and she might even be setting up the next chapter of that same story because of it.
After Binary is dealt a lethal blow by the massive Empress Brood, Carol’s allies can only watch as she unleashes a torrent of power upon the alien menace. Thankfully, Rogue is able to talk Carol down from crossing any lines she can’t come back from. Not only does this save an entire world from Carol’s fury, but it also gives the titular hero of Captain Marvel #49 (by Kelly Thompson, Sergio Dávila, Sean Parsons, Roberto Poggi, Ceci De La Cruz, and VC’s Clayton Cowles) a chance to acknowledge her grief. Better still, her allies help Carol to bury Binary on the same world she was born, although that isn’t the only reason her final resting place is so perfect.
Captain Marvel Just Laid Binary to Rest in the Perfect Location
When readers first got a glimpse of the new Binary in 2021’s Captain Marvel #34 (by Kelly Thompson and Sergio Davila), she had been born of Carol’s powers as a means of escaping the machinations of Vox Supreme. Though this initial creation was absorbed back into Carol, that which would come to be known as Binary was brought into being in the exact same manner later that issue. While Binary would prove to be instrumental in taking down Vox Supreme’s operation, the fact that she was born at all stood as an even greater development. It also just so happened that she was born on the same world where Mar-Vell fell.
Shortly after the original Captain Marvel’s return, the classic hero gave up his second lease on life to single-handedly stave off the threat of the Phoenix Force. The grief of watching her former mentor and the man who loved her die all over again understandably weighed heavily on Carol. But, watching the barren world where his body fell bloom with new life, provided a unique sense of relief knowing there would always be a cosmic reminder of his legacy. Based on that history and all the unanswered questions about Binary’s nature, the Planet Marvel might also see her story continue.
Binary’s Story Could Still Continue
As a being of raw energy, Carol’s allies had to put their own powers to work keeping her corporeal form from dissipating following her untimely demise. That being the case, however, there is no reason that the same physical body couldn’t be imbued with similar cosmic energies to potentially bring her back. Though there isn’t any certainty whether that would actually work, there is by the same token no reason for the possibility to be brushed aside. Especially not when she has been left in the one place where that is most likely to happen.
Considering how much cosmic energy is already coursing through the Planet Marvel and the life that inhabits it, the chance of Binary being renewed for another adventure by simply being laid to rest there is at least on the table. Then again, there is also the possibility that whatever is left of her will become a part of the world itself, just as those that Mar-Vell left behind in his own wake. If nothing else, Carol has somewhere to go when she needs to feel closer to the parts of herself she has lost. That’s more than most cosmic heroes can ask for when faced with unfettered tragedy.
