Will Smith has referred to his 20-year marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith as “excruciating,” “grueling” and “like gardening.” And now that the pair’s kids have flown the coop, pals tell RadarOnline.com exclusively he’s adding a new word: “OVER!”
In a bombshell world exclusive, a well-placed insider close to the 49-year-old star and his wife squealed the two are already living separate lives and could file for a blockbuster $270 million Hollywood divorce if a planned round of last-ditch counseling doesn’t produce results.
“They decided on a trial separation and have barely spent any time together lately,” the source dished.
“Everyone was hoping it would make them realize how much they love each other, but the reality is that they’re both getting a taste of the single life and they’re enjoying it. “It seems like they’re happier apart.”
The news comes as no shock to anyone following the Smith saga. The A-list couple has been dogged for years by rumors of cheating, swinging and splits.
In 2013, Jada, 46, actually took to social media to refute allegations she and Will had an “open marriage.” Three years later, Will confessed to a British newspaper they’d been through “a lot of marriage counseling.”
But RadarOnline.com’s source attributed their current breakup to a far more conventional development — their now-grown kids are increasingly out of the picture!
The stars have two globetrotting children — Jaden, 19, and Willow, 17 — in addition to 25-year-old Trey Smith, Will’s son from his prior marriage to Sheree Zampino.
For two years, Jaden has been adding roles to his acting resume. He’ll co-star this year, opposite model-actress Cara Delevingne, in the movie Life in a Year.
Willow, meanwhile, recently sparked rumors of a possible modeling career after making a splash at the Dior Spring-Summer Haute Couture show during Paris Fashion Week.
“Their kids are older now and they’ve grown apart, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Will and Jada decided they’re better off separated and make this split permanent,” the insider added.
“They love each other, but they’re not a traditional couple in any sense and neither of them wants to feel tied down.”
Jada seemed to confirm our source’s assertion of imminent divorce when she posted a cryptic message on Jan. 12 to her much-followed Twitter feed.
“My true happiness has never been found in forms of convention,” she wrote in what many friends read as an attack on the “convention” of marriage.
“The restrictions of convention make me feel too small to be happy.”
In fact, an informant explained to RadarOnline.com that most of the momentum for the trial separation is coming from Jada, who has spent many years living in Will’s shadow and now wants to spread her wings and focus on her career.
“After this relationship break, the plan is to spend some time in marriage counseling and figure out what they both want,” the source spilled.
“The way things are going, it looks like therapy could be their last hope.”
