Reece James has given his verdict on who is better: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? The 22-year-old defender answered the most controversial question in football via a Twitter Q&A.
His admission comes at the peak of speculation regarding Ronaldo’s and Messi’s respective future endeavours. The former Manchester United striker recently became a free agent after the Red Devils announced that he has left the club with immediate effect.
Naturally, Ronaldo continues to be heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge after Todd Boehly tried signing the 37-year-old in the summer. Meanwhile, with regard to Messi, the Paris Saint-Germain star sees his contract at Les Parc des Princes expire at the end of the season and clubs are already queuing for the chance to secure his signature.
Chelsea almost signed the Argentine in 2014 had the move not collapsed. Messi ‘secretly’ agreed to join the Blues eight-years ago for £208million, but the move fell through after his dad and agent Jorge Messi found out about the talks between player and club.
With Ronaldo enjoying as much of a rich history as Messi, James has said who he thinks is better. On Twitter, he kept his answer short and sweet: “Ronaldo.”
James was also asked which former Chelsea player he wishes he could have played alongside. The right-back revealed that he would have loved to play with club legend Didier Drogba.
“I would have loved to play with @didierdrogba,” James said. “Because I like getting forward and crossing. Then he’s one of the best strikers in history and scored amazing goals with his head. Perfect combo. Ps. Champs league Final.”
Ronaldo and Drogba in their respective primes and combining in a two-man strike partnership while James delivers crosses into the box would have been a force to be reckoned with at the highest level. Unfortunately, fans will be unable to see the Chelsea defender share the pitch with Drogba away from a charity game.
But, with the former United striker a free agent, it remains a possibility that James does so with Ronaldo…
