Jason Momoa reports that he believes there will be more Aquaman movies in DC’s future.

Back in January, DC Studios announced its lineup of films and television shows headed our way under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and the future of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman looked bleak. In addition to the character being notably absent from the DCU’s first chapter, titled Gods and Monsters, rumors circulated that Momoa had been cast as the fan-favorite antihero Lobo. This led many to believe that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (aka Aquaman 2) would be the character’s final appearance in the DC Universe, but according to Games Radar (via Total Film), that may not be the case.
In a recent interview with the magazine, Jason Momoa said he believes the beloved underwater hero has a promising future and will have a big role in the DC Universe going forward. He stated,
“I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!”
Jason Momoa added that he had a blast shooting Aquaman 2, and he hopes fans are excited to see the film. He also shared that he had a great time working with Patrick Wilson, who reprises his role as King Orm in the upcoming sequel.
Following an announcement by James Gunn that Henry Cavill’s Superman and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam would not be involved with the DC Universe going forward, fans understandably assumed Jason Momoa would no longer be playing Aquaman either. Now, after Momoa’s comments to Total Film, we can’t help but wonder if the numerous meetings the 43-year-old actor had with Gunn had anything to do with his possibly playing Lobo at all. Perhaps they were simply discussing how Arthur Curry will play into the DCU’s future?
Whether or not Jason Momoa will continue to portray Aquaman in the DC Universe after The Lost Kingdom remains to be seen. Last month, we learned from our trusted and proven sources that early test screenings for the forthcoming sequel were so bad that people actually walked out. Now, reshoots are reportedly underway to make the film more appealing to audiences.
Along with Jason Momoa, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom stars Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Amber Heard, Vincent Regan, Jani Zhao, Randall Park, and Temuera Morrison. James Wan returns to direct from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The film is slated for release on December 25, 2023.
Not much is known about the plot of Aquaman 2, but the film will reportedly take fans down a new road with Jason Momoa’s titular character, as he is forced to trust a sinister enemy in order to save Atlantis and the rest of the world. The first movie introduced audiences to the underwater city of Atlantis and its warring factions, including the Atlanteans and the Trench. It’s likely the sequel will delve deeper into the internal conflicts of Atlantis and introduce new characters and creatures.
In addition to Aquaman 2, Jason Momoa is also set to star in this year’s Fast X. The hotly anticipated tenth installment in Universal’s blockbuster franchise is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 19, 2023. Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, John Cena, and Jason Statham are also set to appear in the film.
