The heroic Doberman sacrificed its own life to protect his family when the snakes appeared
The heroic Doberman sacrificed its own life to protect his family when the snakes slithered into their home.
In a brutal fight to the death, the dog received countless bites from the mountain cobras – each one toxic enough to kill a man – but only succumbed when he had saved the day.
Villagers from Sebekapur in India’s eastern state of Odisha honoured the dog, whose name as not emerged, with a funeral procession after his heroics emerged.
The Deccan newspaper revealed how the dog had saved eight members of Dibakar Raita’s family when the snakes tried to enter his home.
Snakes kill more than 45,000 people a year in India, but the dog was not going to let the poisonous reptiles get near his master’s family.
Over several hours, the dog and snakes fought out a running battle around the family homes, the dog trying to sink his teeth without being struck by poisonous fangs.
“Blood could be seen spilling onto the patio as the pet animal and snakes brawled,” reported the local newspaper.

Cobra venom can be effective within seconds, the neurotoxins spreading rapidly through the bloodstream and disabling the nerve endings that operate the diaphragm to cause respiratory failure.
Only when the dog had killed the last cobra had it time to die, a sacrifice that left owner Dibakar overwhelmed.
“I’m shocked,” he choked.
“He has made the supreme sacrifice for me and my family. I will remember him till our death.
“I pray God – May his soul rest in peace.”
As news spread of the fight to the death, hundreds of people across the district converged on the village to lay wreaths and floral tributes on the body of the pet before holding a funeral procession and burial.
