Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reveals the scene in which Tom Holland’s Peter Parker truly became the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently said that Tom Holland became Spider-Man during one key moment in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.
Feige opened up about the scene that marked the final stage of Peter Parker’s transition to fully-fledged superhero in an interview with editor Nick Lowe included in The Amazing Spider-Man #900. “It’s lifting the rubble,” he said. “[Spider-Man co-creator Steve] Ditko’s ‘lifting the rubble’ [panel in The Amazing Spider-Man #33]… has stuck with me my whole life, and from the moment I joined Marvel Studios, I was like, ‘We should do that in the movies.’ There’s a bit at the end of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man where he kind of lifts a heavy piece off of them at the pier where Doc Ock is making his machine. But it wasn’t until Spider-Man: Homecoming that we said, ‘Oh, we’re doing it.’ To me, that is when Tom Holland truly becomes Spider-Man. Anyway, that’s the moment. Ditko’s angular metal debris on top of Spidey and water coming down in front of his face.”
Holland first portrayed Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He later reprised the role in a string of subsequent MCU movies, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Stunt coordinator James Young previously described Holland’s audition for Civil War as his favorite moment from his time at Marvel Studios. “This kid just came in and just… that’s Peter Parker. That’s Peter Parker. There’s no other way about it,” Young said.
Tom Holland’s Future as the MCU’s Spider-Man
Holland has donned a variety of different Spider-Man costumes since that first audition, all of which have been missing one vital component: zippers. The English actor confirmed that he’s been requesting this quality of life improvement to no avail since landing the role and has all but given up on it ever happening. “Listen, I’ve played Spider-Man six times, and every single time I’ve made that request. But it hasn’t happened,” he said, in a previous interview. “So it doesn’t matter if I play him for a 12th time, I don’t think I’m going to get that zipper, and I’m happy to live with that.”

The star won’t be slipping into Spidey’s spandex again anytime soon, however. Holland announced he was taking a break from acting in February 2022, following the release of his next project, Apple TV+ show The Crowded Room. How long Holland’s acting break will last is currently unclear.
Holland’s Spider-Man films are now streaming on Disney+.
