Chinese and British paleontologists have identified a new species of dinosaur from the genus Stegosaur in China.
It is believed to be the oldest baleen dinosaur ever found in Asia and one of the earliest excavated species in the world.
In a study published March 4 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, paleontologists describe the fossil remains of a plant-eating horned dinosaur, consists of the spine of the back, shoulders, thighs, feet, ribs and some layers of hard armor.
The fossil date is dated to the Bajocian period of the Middle Jurassic, much older than most known cephalopods .
According to scientists, the newly discovered dinosaur had 4 legs and was relatively small in size, with a length of about 2.8m from the tip of the nose to the tail. This dinosaur appeared about 168 million years ago.
It is not known whether this is an adult or immature dinosaur fossil .
Scientists have named the new dinosaur Bashanosaurus primitivus. Bashan is the ancient name for the area of Chongqing, China, where a new species of dinosaur was discovered, while primitivus in Latin means first.
