Marvel Cinematic Universe star Mark Ruffalo addressed Thor: Love and Thunder’s underwhelming reception from critics and fans.
Per The Direct, during a recent appearance at Emerald City Comic, the Emmy-winning actor was asked which among the Marvel heroes he would want to make a buddy-cop movie with. Ruffalo chose long-time collaborator Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, whom he had already worked with on Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. He also joked that Marvel may need The Hulk to return to the Thor franchise to save it.
“I have a soft spot for Chris Hemsworth. So, I keep waiting for them to invite me back to the Thor franchise to save it… That’s a joke… I’m canceled…” Ruffalo said, seemingly poking fun at Thor: Love and Thunder for becoming one of Marvel Studios’ lowest rated movies with a 6.3 rating on IMDb and a B+ grade on CinemaScore.
Will Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth Return to the MCU?
For over a decade, Ruffalo has portrayed Bruce Banner/ The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His most recent appearance as the iconic hero was on Disney+’s She Hulk: Attorney at Law, where he starred in three episodes alongside Tatiana Maslany’s titular Jade Giant. At the time of writing, Marvel Studios is yet to announce any future projects involving The Hulk. However, recent reports suggest an adaptation of the World War Hulk storyline could be in development.
In a recent interview, She-Hulk actor Jon Bass, who played Todd Phelps and HulkKing in the legal comedy, shared his insight on Ruffalo’s unchanging excitement for playing Bruce Banner despite the long hours of shooting in a motion capture suit. “I talked to Mr. Mark Ruffalo about it, and what’s so cool is that he still loves it,” Bass said.
As for Hemsworth, he also had the chance to address his future in the MCU following Thor: Love and Thunder’s theatrical release in August 2022. The action star shared that he’s still “completely open” to reprise Thor on the condition that Marvel Studios comes up with “something unique and fresh and unexpected to do with the character and the world.” Hemsworth also discussed the possibility of Thor 5, which he believed would only work if Marvel drastically changed its tone from previous Thor installments.
Thor: Love and Thunder is now available to stream on Disney+.
