Casemiro believes he has been given more creative responsibility at Manchester United compared to his long spell at Real Madrid.
The Brazilian has been a revelation since arriving from Madrid for around £60million last summer, forming a solid and experienced base in front of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
Between them, the trio have led Erik ten Hag’s side towards an outstanding season, with the Carabao Cup already secured and progression into the latter stages of the FA Cup and Europa League while also mounting a Premier League title chase also looks likely.
But it was at Wembley that another facet of the 30-year-old’s game came to the fore, with his powering header opening the scoring and registering goal number five for United this season.
Five assists to add to that tally is proof of Casemiro’s growing influence going forward, and the midfielder so famed for his defensive efforts detailed his evolution into the new role under United boss Erik ten Hag.
“Every player has their role, maybe here [at United] I have got more of a creative role,” Casemiro told United Review. “But as I always like to say, my job is different.
“Everyone knows my role and I’m sure it’s why Manchester United signed me – to give the team balance, support my team-mates in defence, help the midfield, the full-backs and the centre-backs, close the gaps.
“That’s what’s most important in my role. Of course, goals and assists are important and make everyone happy, but the role of the defensive central midfielder today is the one I’ve just described.”
With a four-year contract penned upon his arrival last summer, Casemiro, 31, will continue to evolve at United well into his 30s. The midfielder has shown no signs of ageing or fatigue this year either, his 33 appearances across all competitions the fifth most at United – and it would have been more were it not for a three-game suspension.
