Arsenal wonderkid Myles Lewis-Skelly will reportedly sign a new two-year contract with the north London side in what is a huge boost for Mikel Arteta’s future plans.
According to the Atheltic, the 16-year-old England youth international will soon sign new terms with Arsenal to commit the defensive midfielder at the club until he is 17, where Lewis-Skelly will be legally allowed to sign a professional contract with the Premier League leaders.
Lewis-Skelly is regarded by many Arsenal fans and youth pundits as one of the most exciting talents in England, with the midfielder enjoying a breakout year under U-18s coach Jack Wilshere and making a big name for himself in the wider footballing world.
Rated higher than Arsenal record-breaker Ethan Nwaneri, Lewis-Skelly’s ability to play under pressure and to thrive with driving runs from deep has made the 16-year-old a talent to keep an eye on for the Gunners, with his position also something that could make the teenager a future first-teamer.
Indeed, the north London side have not had a central midfielder break into the first-team from the academy since Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who he himself eventually turned out as a right-back under Unai Emery. Yet Lewis-Skelly could buck this barren run in the years to come.
Arteta has put a massive emphasis on bringing in players from Hale End into the senior squad, and with Lewis-Skelly committing his future with the club until he can turn professional, big plans could be in the making for the 16-year-old midfielder.
LEWIS-SKELLY SIGNING NEW ARSENAL CONTRACT IS MAJOR
Arsenal have prided itself in developing players and bringing them into the senior squad in recent years, with Bukayo Saka being one of the best wingers in world football and Emile Smith Rowe having the potential to become a superstar if he can stay fit. Which is why keeping Lewis-Skelly is such a boost.
The defensive midfielder has shone at youth level this season and already looks set to make the leap into the senior fold, and the Gunners committing Lewis-Skelly to the club is a huge boost for Arsenal’s long-term aspirations under Arteta and Hale End.
