Frank Lampard insists he has overseen improvement at Everton despite their slide towards another relegation dogfight.
The former Chelsea and Derby manager took over at Goodison Park from Rafa Benitez 11 months ago and managed to preserve the Toffees’ top flight status.
After limited investment during the summer, Lampard has struggled to lift Everton up the table and Tuesday night’s 4-1 thrashing at home against Brighton left him clinging to his job.
A defeat against Manchester United in the FA Cup tomorrow night could spell the end but the 44-year-old insists he has what it takes to turn the ailing Merseyside club’s fortunes around.
Indeed, Lampard pointed to the struggles Mikel Arteta encountered during his first two years at Arsenal before turning them into title challengers, albeit after spending over £300million on new players.
‘Yes, I have in what I perceive as improvement in the way we try to take the squad forward,’ said a defiant Lampard in his pre-match press conference.
‘Some of the things that happened last summer in terms o player sthat have gone in their own direction good for the club and for them. We are trying to bring in players that can help us move forward.
‘Some players need to settle and improve we will be there to help them do that as quickly as possible. In terms of league position you would probably say not really because the reality is that takes time and work.
Arsenal legend concedes Manchester United are a threat in the title race
‘There’s not a story out there if you look at the most high performing team in the Premier League this year in Arsenal for being top of the league.
‘If you look at their journey over the last three years you see how typically a journey can look. It’s not an easy road and that one comes with huge investment which is part of their story.
‘Every improvement has to be step by step and then one day you go ‘oh here it is, here’s what it looks like’ at the moment you can’t see it from the outside but in my opinion we have improved.’
