Blade will not only properly introduce vampires to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it can also bring a terrifying villain in Phase 5, in big part thanks to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The MCU continues its expansion with the Multiverse Saga, which has made way for the introduction of new characters, some of them having already been adapted to the big screen in universes separate from the MCU. Among them is Blade, who will now be played by Mahershala Ali, and after his “debut” in a voice cameo in Eternals, he’s ready to return with his own movie, simply titled Blade.
Blade will be part of the MCU’s supernatural side, which has already been explored with the TV series Moon Knight and the Halloween special Werewolf by Night, so Blade will be the MCU’s first taste of what vampires are like. Blade is scheduled for a 2024 release, and as such, plot details remain a secret, but given Eric Cross’ history in the comics, what the MCU has built so far, and recent events in the Multiverse Saga, Blade could also introduce a terrifying villain in Phase 5, all thanks to Scarlet Witch and her actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Blade Can Properly Introduce Chthon To The MCU
In Marvel Comics, Blade is a vampire hunter who was later retroactively established as a dhampir (a vampire/human hybrid), so he uses his unique physiology to become the best vampire hunter. Vampires in the Marvel Universe were created thanks to a group of Atlantean sorcerers who came across the Darkhold, a grimoire written by the Elder God Chthon. During a war, these sorcerers used a resurrection ritual found in the Darkhold to raise their fallen enemies and create a legion of soldiers who couldn’t be killed – what they didn’t know is that Chthon is Earth’s first black magician, and a very powerful one, so the Darkhold has his dark influence, and that’s how they unintentionally created vampires.
Now, Chthon and the Darkhold are already part of the MCU, but their backstory hasn’t been properly explored. Just like in the comics, the Darkhold is a book of spells transcribed from all the knowledge Chthon carved into the walls of the Darkhold Castle at the top of Mount Wundagore. Chthon is also the one who prophesied the rise of the Scarlet Witch, and it was she who ended up destroying the Darkhold and every copy of it in the multiverse. Blade will have to cover the origin of vampires in some way, and it has the advantage of Chthon already being part of the MCU, and with the destruction of the Darkhold, Chthon could return for revenge. However, Scarlet Witch is supposedly dead, so the only one who could battle Chthon is Blade, as part of him comes from Chthon’s dark magic.
How Blade Can Bring Scarlet Witch Back
Blade’s arrival to the MCU and the possible introduction of Chthon as a villain can make way for the return of Scarlet Witch. At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Darkhold Castle crumbled and collapsed, trapping Scarlet Witch, but as big MCU characters rarely die, Scarlet Witch is expected to return at some point in the Multiverse Saga. The rise of Chthon can be what pulls her back into action, and she could be a powerful ally to Blade, which can also help her redeem herself after everything she caused in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Blade, then, can not only bring an Elder God into the MCU and make him one of Phase 5’s most powerful villains, but he can also be key in Scarlet Witch’s return’
