Yet again, an alleged home invader was thwarted by a homeowner with a firearm who defended himself and his home, however, a follow-up to the story indicated that a second alleged invader was released without charges being pressed.
The Terre Haute Police Department in Terre Haute, Indiana was the first to release news of the event, which happened around 5:30 am. The police department posted details of the event on their Facebook page:
“Vigo County Central Dispatch received a 911 call around 5:30 am today from the 200 block of N. Fruitridge Ave. reporting that a homeowner had just shot and intruder in their home. They also said that a second person that was with the intruder had fled the area on foot.
Multiple officers responded to the area, secured the scene and began an investigation. Officers located the second person that had been with the alleged intruder, hiding in a neighboring back yard and they were detained. The alleged intruder was determined to be deceased, at the scene.
Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians responded to the scene and this is currently an active investigation. There is no danger to the community and no further information can be released at this time.”
This story is another in a long line of examples that show why it is so important to have the capability and training to defend yourself. Calling 911 can be a saving grace at times, but occasionally the only way to guarantee your safety and that of your loved ones is to take matters into your own hands.
The story took a worrisome turn in the next post from the Terre Haute Police Department when they announced the release of the alleged accomplice in the break-in:
“The man who was shot and killed during Sunday morning’s home invasion was 30 year old Michael Bell of Clay City. The person who was allegedly with Bell during the incident, was released Sunday without charges being filed at this time. No charges are being filed against the homeowner/victim. This is an ongoing investigation, more information will be released as the case allows.”
This is understandably alarming to residents of the area, knowing that someone who is allegedly willing to break the law has been put back onto the streets with complete freedom. Members of the Facebook group made their voices heard regarding this exact concern and their dissatisfaction with the lack of prosecution:
“Arrested for home invasion but released without charges?? Home invasion/burglary is allowed now? How is that? I’ve seen people go to prison for WAY LESS. SUCH a great job.”
“Here is my take the THPD brought her in I suppose it was the prosecutor who did not file a charge yet. THPD did their job”
Of course, it is too soon to jump to conclusions as more details about the case are released and a clearer picture is painted of the events that transpired.
