The magical duo from Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place have enjoyed a close friendship since the show aired it’s final episode in 2012. Ten years on, let’s look at Selena Gomez and David Henrie’s friendship and how it survived the show going off air and dating rumours.

The teens co-starred on the epic show Wizards of Waverly Place as brother and sister Justin and Alex Russo. While many Disney colleagues either move on and get together (remember Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake?), Selena Gomez and David Henrie’s friendship was not saved from the dating whispers either.

Their tight-knit relationship led to questions from fans about whether sparks flew off-set as well as on the screen.

Although fans would have secretly loved the co-stars falling for each other on set, it appears it’s no the case. Selena and David dating rumours are just that. The two are close and have never confirmed anything happened between the pair.

Sources claimed they had several dates in 2010 – while the Wizards of Waverly Place was still in air – and were spotted having dinner in 2014.

However, they never said the connection was more than platonic. Therefore, the times they were seen were most likely outings as friends. Friends can eat food together, right?

It appears they’ve got each other’s back and just like the other’s company. Selena apparently third-whiled one of David’s dates before, writes Distractify. It’s unlikely she would have done that if they dated. Awkward.

The pair reunited for David’s directorial debut for This Is The Year. A digital premiere took place in August 2020 (Covid pandemic). It also featured a Q&A session with the Wizarding duo as well as the cast.

Not only that, but Selena worked as a executive producer for the coming of age film. Who would think Justin and Alex Russo would work together in the future, eh?

David told Insider at the time the reunion was “incredible”.

He said: “It’s been incredible working with her because what the show did was really bond Selena and I like brother and sister and so over the years.”

But, Selena Gomez and David Hernie were not the only friendship reunion of WOWP on set. Jordan Greenwald is the son of WOWP creator Todd Greenwald. Greg Sulkin, who played Mason Greyback on the 2000s show, was cast as Zoey’s self-centered boyfriend in This Is The Year. We can’t forget that Josh’s teacher in the film is played by Jeff Garlin, who was Uncle Kelbo in the Disney hit.

David explained to Insider how, despite the several years passing, the have “kept in super close touch and continued” their friendship.

The actor added: “We’ve gotten to see each other mature in our own paths, in our own lanes, in our own ways — which has only strengthened our friendship.”

But even filming small snippets or promotional material for the film sent them back down memory lane.

David elaborated: “She was just going, ‘David, do you believe we’re here right now? Are we on Disney? Are we back in 2009 or is it 2020? What’s going on?’”

The star said they were “constantly” joking about how they felt as if they were on a Disney set. He admitted they “missed” working each other in that way.
